September 30 , 2008

FATALITY
At approximately 8:38 p.m. on September 29, 2008, Midland Police and Midland Fire/EMS were called to the scene of a fatality at the intersection of Big Spring and Solomon Lane. 

According to witnesses, 75-year-old Juana Reyes Rodriguez was traveling westbound on Solomon Lane in a 1998 Toyota Camry.  She failed to yield the right-of-way to an oncoming car traveling northbound on Big Spring.  The 1998 Dodge Durango, driven by 44-year-old Marsha Hodges, struck the Camry on the driver’s side.  Rodriguez was pronounced dead at the scene.

Hodges was transported to Midland Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. 

This was Midland’s 10th fatality of 2008.


PROMOTION CEREMONY
The Midland Police Department will promote one of its own to higher ranks.  A promotion ceremony will be held on Wednesday, October 1, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. in the third floor conference room at the MPD.

Officer Pete Dehlinger will be promoted to sergeant.  Dehlinger has been employed by the department for 10 years.  He will begin his sergeant duties in the patrol division. 

The media is invited to attend and help make this a special moment for the department.


SWEARING-IN CEREMONY
The Midland Police Department will welcome two new officers.   The swearing-in ceremony will take place on Wednesday, October 1, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. in the third floor classroom.

Tom Gray and Donnie McElhorne will take the oath of office.  They are both experienced police officers, one is from El Paso and the other is from Border Patrol.

They will move on to the Field Training Officer (FTO) program as Probationary Police Officer (PPO) for 17-weeks.  During this time, they will be teamed up with experienced officers and rated daily on his performance in the field as well as paper work. 

The media is invited to attend and to help make this a special day for this officer.
