FEBRUARY 10th CITY COUNCIL MEETING

  • During a 9:15 a.m. briefing session, the City Council will view and discuss the City of Midland Street Paving Video.  The new video is now airing on the City’s Cable Access station, Channel 2 on Suddenlink and Channel 6 on Grande.  It is also on the homepage of the City’s website www.midlandtexas.gov.  The five minute video illustrates and explains the process involved in actually paving a neighborhood street.  In 2008, the City Council approved a 14-year plan aimed at paving all residential roadways in the city.
  • During the regular meeting, the City Council will recognize the Midland Police Department for receiving the 10th National Night Out Award in the past 11-years.  Approximately 95 block parties were held on August 5, 2008, in celebration of National Night Out.  The community-wide event is designed to heighten crime prevention awareness, generate support for and participation in local anti-crime programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police/community relations, and to send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are fighting back.  The 2009 event will be held on August 4th.
  • The City Council will consider resolutions authorizing the execution of Sports Agreements with ten different associations.  They include: the Permian Basin United Soccer Association; Midland Soccer Association; Midland Softball Association; Midland United Girls Softball Association; Midland Recreational Soccer League; Greater Midland Football League; the Texas Cricket Club; Midland Junior Baseball Association; City of Midland Aquatics; and Midland Mad Dog Rugby.  Through these agreements, recreation costs for running league and tournament play have been a savings to the operating budget for the Community Services Department.  Also, through matching funds raised by the associations, capital improvements have been made to facilities that would otherwise have been carried in the City’s operating budget.
