EXPLORER PROGRAMS
The Midland Police Department & Fire Department Explorer Program is up and running again.  For the past year, both programs have gained momentum and they are growing in numbers and in recognition.

The Law Enforcement Explorer Post is a program for young people between the ages of 14 (completed the eighth grade) and 20 who wish to pursue their interest of a career in police work.  On Monday, February 23rd, 2009, 7:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m., the Midland Police Department Explorers will meet at 601 N. Loraine Street, Police Headquarters. The media is invited to attend the gathering and develop a story.

The Fire Services Explorer Post is a program for young people between the ages of 15 and 20 who wish to pursue their interest of a career in fire service. On Tuesday, February 24th, 2009, 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., the Midland Fire Department Explorers will meet at 1500 West Wall Street, Central Fire Station. The media is invited to attend the gathering and develop a story.

Some of the Explorers learn that police or fire work is not for everyone.  Some choose to pursue other related fields.  The program is about more than preparing someone for a career in law enforcement or fire service, it is about building leaders.  There are currently MPD officers who were once explorers and current Fire Cadets who were also explorers.

The Explorer Program has four specific goals:

  1. Gain practical experience in the career interest of the post.
  2. Engage in program activities centered on five emphasis areas (career opportunities, life skills, citizenship, character education, and leadership experience) to encourage the development of the whole person.
  3. Experience positive leadership from adult and youth leaders and have the opportunity to take on leadership roles.
  4. Have a chance to learn and grow in a supportive, caring, and fun environment.
