FEBRUARY 24th CITY COUNCIL MEETING

  • During an 8:30 a.m. briefing session, the City Council will discuss the 2008 Midland Police Department Part One Crime Statistics.  Police Chief Price Robinson will inform the Council Members of the City’s Part One crime numbers.  Part One crimes are defined as Murder/Manslaughter, Forcible Rape, Robbery, Aggravated Assault, Burglary, Theft, and Auto Theft.  These specific offenses are tracked by the department and reported to the FBI on a monthly basis.  A news release with all the data will follow the presentation.
  • Also during the briefing session, the City Council will listen to a presentation regarding the Transportation Division Traffic Statistics for 2008.  A full news release will follow the presentation and include Midland’s five intersections that have the highest rate of accidents.
  • At the beginning of the regular meeting at 10:00 a.m., the City Council will recognize Severe Weather Awareness Week.  The National Weather Service, in conjunction with the Governor's Division of Emergency Management, have proclaimed the week of Feb. 22-28 to be Severe Weather Awareness Week in the State of Texas.  Everyone is encouraged to utilize Severe Weather Awareness Week as a time to work together and deliver messages on safety and preparedness - whether it means dealing with tornadoes, lightning, hailstorms, high winds, flash flooding or a non-weather related emergency that involves a threat to communities across the state of Texas.

OUTDOOR WATERING – IT’S OKAY
Officials with the City of Midland would like to thank the residents of Midland for their cooperation in refraining from watering outdoors.  Beginning Sunday, February 21, 2009, residents can begin to irrigate outside as the Water Purification Plant is back in operation.

In a continuing effort to improve reliability and service in the City’s water system, the City of Midland was replacing outdated electrical switchgear and connecting new pumping equipment at the Water Purification Plant.

This project is part of a $20.8 million project at the Water Purification Plant to improve pressure on the north and west sections of the City and to increase abilities to deliver water to the City.  This project has been ongoing for over a year and should be completed next fall.  It is funded by increased water rates established three years ago and is part of a large plan including a new elevated tower, booster station, and new transmission lines.
