TRAFFIC SYNCHRONIZATION SYSTEM
Motorists should be noticing a smoother commute on Midland streets.  Installation of the City’s new Automated Transportation Management System (ATMS) is now complete and the system is up and running.

The ATMS involves 117 signalized intersections.  All the controllers have been installed at each intersection as well as the wireless field hardware.  All school zone flashers have been installed and data has been converted.  The communications company set up the network and installed necessary software on the City’s server.

The new ATMS should deliver benefits immediately.  Drivers will notice less congestion and experience fewer delays.  The City will also see improved productivity for technicians.  The two-way communications system allows workers to modify or make adjustments from the Traffic Management Center in-house instead of sending a technician to a location to remedy the situation.  Changes can be made based on traffic flow and peak hours.  The company also input data, regarding Midland’s traffic, on the timing program.

The new ATMS replaces the old traffic management system installed in the early 1990s and implemented as two separate systems.
