H1N1 VACCINATION GRADUALLY AVAILABLE
The Health Department will continue to offer the H1N1 vaccination as it becomes available.  Currently, the Health Department is awaiting a new shipment of the vaccine.  The first batch was distributed earlier this month to 2 & 3 year olds.

Private providers in the area are beginning to receive the H1N1 influenza vaccine for their patients who are at high risk for complications. The initial vaccine is being targeted to pregnant women, children 24-59 months, high-risk children 5-18 years old, and the health care workers who serve these populations.

Local health care providers are receiving initial, small shipments of vaccine for their existing patients who need protection most. Vaccine availability from health care providers is expected to improve gradually as additional supplies arrive in upcoming weeks.

Once the Midland Health Department receives another supply, the public will be notified of the distribution.

HEALTH DEPARTMENT EXTENDED HOURS
The Midland Health Department will offer extended hours once a month to help accommodate families with immunization needs.

The Midland Health Department is located at 3303 W. Illinois inside the Kingsway Mall.  Children under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.  Please bring a current shot record.

OCTOBER 27th CITY COUNCIL MEETING

  • During the regular 10:00 a.m. city council meeting, the council will consider an item regarding funds for the HOME Investment Partnerships Program.  Midland Neighborhood Housing Services is preparing an application to the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs for a $300,000 grant.  They are asking the city to waive building permits and reduce sewer tap charges as part of the local match for the grant.  These amounts are already standard contribution of the City for affordable housing non-profits on single family home projects.  Total amount would be $16,500.
  • The City Council will consider accepting the 2009 Homeland Security Grant in the amount of $66,396.  The grant will provide funds for law enforcement Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) projects.  There are not matching funds required for this grant.
  • The City Council will consider accepting a grant from the Bulletproof Vest Program in the amount of $11,280.  The Bulletproof Vest Partnership Grant Act of 1998 directs the U.S. Department of Justice to provide matching grants to state and local law enforcement agencies so they can purchase vests to protect the lives of officers.  This is the eighth time the MPD has been awarded the grant resulting in a savings to the city of $88,634.  Each MPD officer is equipped with a bulletproof vest.  They are replaced every five years at a cost of $564.
  • The City Council will consider accepting the FY2009 Justice Assistance Grant (JAG).  The city would receive $26,689 to be used to purchase equipment, technology, and other material directly related to basic law enforcement.  There is no match required.  The City would receive $26,689 and Midland County would receive $17,792.
