YARD WASTE SITE MULCHING
The City of Midland continues to work with a contractor to mulch yard waste on site at the location on Smith Road just north of Veterans Airpark Lane.  The location is the city’s yard waste dumpster site.

The process started on November 2, 2009, and should be completed the first week of December.  Originally, the process was thought to take approximately two weeks, but is running longer than anticipated.  The public should note that the yard waste site will be closed during this time.

The process includes grinding the branches into smaller wood chips that are collected directly into a 30 cubic yard container.  The full container is loaded onto a truck and hauled to the landfill.  There, the material is used to cover the landfill.

Materials may be diverted to the City of Midland Landfill (located seven miles east of Midland on Garden city highway) and Recom Resource Recovery located at 4705 W, Industrial (formally Discount Materials).  Residents must show their current City of Midland utility bill to receive free yard waste disposal.

CHRISTMAS NIGHT LIGHTS PARADE
This year’s City of Midland Christmas Night Lights Parade will take place on Saturday, December 5, 2009, at 6:30 p.m.  Individuals and groups are encouraged to join the fun and spirit of the season by participating and building a lighted float.

There is still time to log onto the City of Midland’s website, www.midlandtexas.gov, and fill out an application. Or, stop by the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center at 2300 Butternut Lane.

Use your imagination to light it up!  Incorporate illumination through generators, battery packs, power converters, or any other source. Head lamps, flood lights, LED lights, glow necklaces, glow tape, string lights, strobes may all be used.

Awards will be given to Best Design, Best Lighting, & Most Humorous.

The parade is just part of an evening long celebration.  Following the parade, the City will unveil a new 30’ Christmas tree at the tree lighting ceremony.  Santa will greet the kids and the Midland Reporter Telegram will supply hot chocolate.  Following the tree lighting, residents are urged to bring their blankets and lawn chairs for a movie in the park.  The movie ELF will be shown outside at Centennial Plaza around 8:15 p.m.
