CITY DECORATES FOR THE HOLIDAYS
It is beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Downtown Midland.  Crews are hanging decorations along Wall Street beginning Monday, November 23, 2009, until Wednesday, November 25, 2009.  City workers will begin at Weatherford and work west to Garfield.

136 wreaths, eight strands of garland, and a 15-foot snowman will help decorate the City.  A total of 170 man-hours will be spent hanging the decorations.

This is the fifth year for these decorations as they were purchased in 2005.

This year, the City will unveil a new 30-foot Christmas tree.  It will be constructed the week of November 30 prior to the scheduled Christmas Parade and Christmas Tree Lighting on December 5.

NO DRIPPINGS IN DRAINS
As residents prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving and consume delicious foods, City officials want to remind those doing the cooking and/or cleaning that disposing of grease, oils, and fats properly can keep sewer lines clear.

Each year around the holidays, City of Midland sewer lines are at risk for clogging because residents pour fat-laden foods down the drain. When a clog occurs, raw sewage can back up into homes and seep up at utility covers in the street.

The city urges residents to:

  • Never pour fats, oil, grease, or fatty food scraps into your sink, garbage disposal, or toilet.
  • Scrape or wipe grease and food scraps from pots, pans, grills, and utensils into the trash.
  • Avoid using cloth towels or rags to wipe or scrape plates or clean greasy dishes because the grease will go into the sewer when the towels are washed.
  • Place a strainer over the sink drain when rinsing dishes or when peeling or trimming food.

CITY HOLIDAY
The City of Midland will observe the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday, November 26 and Friday, November 27, 2009.

In observance of this holiday, City of Midland offices will be closed.

Emergency personnel will work normal shifts to provide services to the community.

TRASH PICK UP FOR THE HOLIDAY
The City of Midland Sanitation Division is spreading the word to residents about what to expect for trash services during the Thanksgiving holiday.

The Thanksgiving schedule will be as follows:

  • Monday, November 23, 6:30 a.m. - 6 p.m. Pickup Monday and some of Tuesday’s normal  pickup
  • Tuesday, November 24, 6:30 a.m. - 6 p.m. Pick up Tuesday and some of Thursday’s normal pickup
  • Wednesday, November 24, 6:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday’s normal pickup
  • Thursday, November 25 – no trash pickup
  • Friday, November 26 – no trash pickup

The City will work extended hours in an attempt to service every residential container at least twice during the week of Thanksgiving.  Residents who use carts need to place them in their designated pickup areas EVERY morning the week of Thanksgiving due to the varying pickup days.

Additionally, the City of Midland Landfill will be closed on Thursday and Friday and will reopen on Saturday from 7:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.

ROBBERY ARREST
The Midland County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a man in connection with a Robbery which occurred on Friday, November 20, 2009, at the Uncle’s convenience store in Midland County.

Two more charges are pending with the Midland Police Department for 59-year-old Jimmie Dean Hogue (6-18-50).  Detectives are in the process of getting two warrants for Robbery in connection with the Robbery at the 7-11 at 115 W. Hogue turned himself into authorities this morning.
