2009 TRAFFIC ACCIDENT REPORT
The City of Midland's Traffic Engineering Division has completed the 2009 accident report. A presentation of the annual report was made to the City Council on Tuesday, March 9, 2010.
The total number of accidents in the City decreased 5.61% from 3,331 in 2008 to 3,144 in 2009.
The number of injuries decreased from 1,214 in 2008 to 866 in 2009.
The number of fatalities increased from 13 in 2008 to 17 in 2009.
The number of alcohol/and or drug related accidents increased from 148 in 2008 to 165 in 2009.
There were 9 intersections that had seven or more accidents compared to 22 in 2008.
There were no intersections with an M.E.V. (million entering vehicle) rating of 2.0 or above in 2008. This statistic takes into consideration the number of vehicles that travel through the intersection vs. the number of accidents.
The following is a list of the five highest accident intersections (according to M.E.V. rating) in the City of Midland during 2009:
1) Midland Dr. & Briarwood Ave. 1.14 M.E.V.
2) Wall St. & Thomason Dr. 0.86 M.E.V.
3) Cuthbert Ave. & Big Spring St. 0.67 M.E.V.
4) Midkiff Rd. & Wall St. 0.57 M.E.V.
5) Andrews Hwy. & Midland Dr. 0.57 M.E.V.
The intersection with the highest number of accidents was Andrews Hwy. & Midland Dr. with a total of 15 accidents and an M.E.V. rating of 0.57.
The average M.E.V. rating of the intersections listed in the 2009 report is 0.64 compared to 0.90 in 2008 indicating a very low ratio of accidents to traffic volume throughout the City.
