"KEEP RIGHT" PROGRAM
In an effort to “Save lives and preserve property”, the Midland Fire Department is launching a new “Keep Right” program. This new program aims to educate drivers to pull over to the right when any emergency vehicle is approaching with lights flashing and siren on.

Drivers can be caught by surprise when an emergency vehicle approaches and may panic, turning their vehicles to the left.  When drivers fail to pull over to the right creates a very dangerous situation for the personnel in the emergency vehicle, as well as for the driver mistakenly moving to the left.  This maneuver can place the vehicle moving to the left in the direct path of a fire truck, ambulance, or police car.  Some fire trucks weigh more than 70,000 lbs and are not designed to make a sudden stop should a passenger vehicle move into its path.   When motorists fail to properly yield to emergency vehicles it also delays the response time to 911 calls.  Quite frequently this can mean the difference between life and death in serious emergencies.

The Midland Fire Department is currently in the process of installing “Keep Right” safety decals on the windshields of emergency vehicles.  The decals are designed to be read in the rear-view mirror providing a visual reminder for drivers to safely move to the right as soon as possible.  We need your help to make driving safer for the public and to reduce response times for emergency vehicles.  Remember to “Keep Right”, it’s the law!
