October is Cybersecurity Month!

Here are five essential tips to ensure your digital safety:

1. Stay Updated: Regularly update all devices and software. Outdated versions can be vulnerable to cyberattacks. Enable automatic updates if possible.

2. Beware of Phishing: Approach emails from unfamiliar senders with caution. Avoid clicking links or downloading attachments unless you're certain of the source.

3. Use Strong Passwords: Opt for a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Consider using a password manager for added security.

4. Activate Two-Factor Authentication: Add an extra layer of security with 2FA. This requires a secondary verification step, like a code from a text message or an app.

5. Stay Informed: Knowledge is power. Stay updated on the latest cyber threats and best practices by following trusted sources and attending local cybersecurity events.

The City of Midland Tech Day is on October 27, 2023, from 9 am - 4 pm at the Bush Convention Center. The day is structured for the public sector entities, but anyone from the Info Technology field is welcome.  Click the link for registration. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/714153581587?aff=oddtdtcreator

Water Conservation Tip of the Month

Efficient Dishwashing Practices

We are on our journey towards water conservation, this month we're focusing on a common household task that can either waste or save a significant amount of water: dishwashing. By adopting efficient dishwashing practices, you can make a positive impact on both your water usage and your utility bills.

Why Efficient Dishwashing Matters:

  1. Water Savings: Traditional dishwashing methods can use a substantial amount of water. By using efficient techniques, you can reduce your water consumption.
  2. Energy Savings: Less hot water is used when you wash dishes efficiently, resulting in lower energy costs and reduced environmental impact.

Efficient Dishwashing Tips:

  1. Scrape, Don't Rinse: Instead of rinsing dishes before loading them into the dishwasher, simply scrape off excess food. Modern dishwashers are designed to handle food residue efficiently.
  2. Run Full Loads: Wait until you have a full load before running your dishwasher. Running partial loads wastes both water and energy.
  3. Use the Eco Setting: If your dishwasher has an eco or energy-saving setting, use it. These settings use less water and energy to get your dishes clean.
  4. Hand Washing: If you wash dishes by hand, fill one sink with soapy water for washing and the other with clean water for rinsing, rather than letting the tap run continuously.
  5. Fix Leaks: Repair any leaks in your faucet or dishwasher promptly to prevent water wastage.
  6. Upgrade Appliances: If it's time to replace your dishwasher, consider a water-efficient model with a high ENERGY STAR rating.
  7. Reuse Rinse Water: If you do rinse dishes, collect the rinse water in a basin and use it to water plants or for other household tasks.

By implementing these practices, you not only conserve water but also contribute to a more sustainable Midland. Let's all do our part to protect this precious resource. Stay tuned for more water-saving tips in our upcoming newsletters. Thank you for your commitment to conserving water in Midland!

Fire Prevention Week 2023

MFD poster contest theme

This year's theme is "Cooking Safety Starts with You." Here's a valuable fire safety tip: If a fire starts on your stovetop, quickly grab a lid and cover the flames. This helps cut off oxygen supply, smothering the fire and preventing it from spreading. Remember to always prioritize safety in your culinary adventures!
