CITY OF MIDLAND RELEASES 2023 TRAFFIC CRASH REPORT

(March 19, 2024)

MIDLAND, TEXAS -- The City of Midland's Traffic Operations Division has released its 2023 Traffic Crash Report, which contains data regarding reported traffic crashes that occurred on public roadways last calendar year within the city limits. The report also includes traffic counts from throughout the year at various locations across the city.

Also, there was a number of crashes that may have occurred but were unreported due to a change in the response policy of the Midland Police Department (MPD). Due to COVID-19, the MPD restricted the types of crashes to which officers responded.  These crashes were those that resulted in injuries and/or if a vehicle was disabled or inoperable in the roadway.

Officials saw the following trends in 2023:

  • The total number of reported crashes in the City of Midland slightly increased -- with 2,919 in 2022 to 3,016 in 2023.
  • The number of crashes with injuries, which are always responded to and reported by police, increase by 9% from 874 in 2022 to 959 in 2023.
  • The number of fatalities in 2023 was 20, resulting from 18 fatal crashes compared to 2022 was 24 fatalities, resulting from 23 fatal crashes.
  • Overall, traffic volume counts taken throughout the city in 2023 increased 15 percent compared to 2022 counts at the same locations.
  • The location with the highest number of reported crashes in 2023 is the interchange of Loop 250 at Andrews Highway, as in prior years.
  • Seven of the Top 10 high crash locations in Midland are interchanges on either Loop 250 or Interstate. As expected, the high crash locations identified each year generally represent the highest volume intersections within the city limits.

Traffic volumes provided in the annual report represent one 24-hour period of data collection that occurred during that year. Due to variations in daily traffic patterns, great care should be exercised in determining trends by comparing counts between multiple years at any specific location.

Annual Traffic Crash Reports going back to 2010 can be found on the city’s website under the Transportation page. City officials continue to monitor all intersections citywide, coordinate with the Texas Department of Transportation and other stakeholders, and implement any changes or additions to existing traffic control devices or intersection geometrics as appropriate and as funding becomes available.
