FORMER MAYOR CARROLL THOMAS PASSES AWAY
(March 24, 2025)
MIDLAND, TEXAS -- Former Midland Mayor Carroll Thomas passed away this weekend, according to the family. He was 81.
Thomas is a former member of the City of Midland’s Planning and Zoning Commission, serving as its chairman in 1975. Thomas was elected to the Midland City Council in 1975, serving as mayor pro-tem from 1978 to 1979.
In 1986, Thomas became the city’s 24th mayor since 1907. He served in that role from 1986 to 1992. During Thomas’ time as mayor, the City of Midland built a new central fire station, added two floors to City Hall, acquired a new police headquarters and led the council to research and design a new air terminal building.
Thomas was a 1956 graduate of Midland High, a 1961 graduate of Texas Tech and an exploration and production geologist.
"Former Mayor Carroll Thomas was a good man," Midland Mayor Lori Blong said. "He and his wife, Georgia, were married 57 years. I’ve known them my whole life. They’re incredible people — steady, kind, and full of love for our city. Mayor Thomas led by example and never sought the spotlight. He was a kind, gracious and thoughtful leader. Midland is a better place because of him."
Services will be held at Stonegate Fellowship at 2 p.m. on March 29.
The City of Midland sends its condolences to Georgia, their two children and the rest of Thomas’ family.
