Midland's unemployment rate well below the average across Texas, U.S.

MIDLAND’S UNEMPLOYMENT RATE STILL MORE THAN A POINT BELOW STATE AVERAGE

(Aug. 15, 2025)

MIDLAND, TEXAS -- The unemployment rate in the Midland metropolitan statistical area remained well below the average across Texas and around the nation during the month of July, according to the Texas Workforce Commission.

The Workforce Commission reported a 3.1% unemployment rate in the Midland MSA. That was the lowest in Texas in July, more than 1 point below the state average (4.2%) and a point-and-a-half below the national average (4.6%).

Rounding out the lowest jobless rates in the state were Amarillo (3.2%), San Angelo (3.2%), Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos (3.5%) and Abilene (3.6%). Odessa’s unemployment rate in July came in at 3.8%.

The unemployment rate in Midland is up from June (3.0%) but still lower than July 2024 (3.2%). The Workforce Commission also reported Midland saw gains in the civilian workforce compared to one year ago – 106,300 in July 2025 compared to 103,800 in July 2024 (an increase of 2.4%).
