Comptroller shows record sales tax collection for Midland

CITY REPORTS RECORD SALES TAX COLLECTION IN MAY

(May 7, 2025)

MIDLAND, TEXAS -- The City of Midland collected $6.846 million in sales tax during the month of May – a 16.07% increase compared to May 2024. 

The collection – a record for any month – is partially due to an audit adjustment of approximately of $707,000 in the City's favor. The record revenue moved the year-to-date balance to $46,054,793, a 3.51% increase over this point last year. Midland’s fiscal year starts on Oct. 1.

This month's sales tax revenue was 12.01% higher than the monthly budget. The City’s year-to-date actuals are $2,769,692 more than budget.

Sales tax revenue is generated by sales tax income from two months prior to collection; May’s collection is based on March sales. The City of Midland collects a full cent of the 8.25% of sales tax inside the City of Midland.
