SALES TAX COLLECTION ON PACE TO BE SECOND HIGHEST IN CITY HISTORY

(July 10, 2025)

MIDLAND, TEXAS -- The City of Midland is still outpacing the last fiscal year for sales tax collected.

This week, the Texas Comptroller reported the City of Midland collected $5.550 million, which raised the total for fiscal year 2025 to $56.711 million – a 2.16% increase compared to last year. The total collection through 10 months of FY 2025 is also $3.131 million above the budget forecast.

Sales tax collection makes up a greater total of the General Fund revenue, outpacing revenue from property taxes. This year is on pace to be the second largest collection in the city’s history (behind only FY 2023).

Should the City of Midland finish FY 2025 with the same amount that was collected in August and September of 2024 ($11.585 million), the city would end the year with $68.297 million, which would be more than $1 million greater than last year. The Midland City Council approved a FY 2025 budget that included a sales tax forecast of $65 million.

The collection in July was 1.22% lower than July 2024 and marked the second-straight month the city reported a decrease year-over-year. City officials also reported that the July collection was 5.23% higher than the monthly budget.

Sales tax revenue is generated by sales tax income from two months prior to collection; July’s collection is based on May sales. The City of Midland collects a full cent of the 8.25% of sales tax inside the City of Midland.
