CITY POISED TO BEAT SALES TAX NUMBERS FROM FY 2024, 2025 BUDGET

MIDLAND, TEXAS -- The City of Midland appears set to beat Fiscal Year 2024 numbers and its budgeted amount for sales tax collected in a year.

The State of Texas sent the City more than $6.231 million in sales tax in August. That raised the amount for FY 2025 to $62.924 million (with one month left in the fiscal year). That total is more than $1 million greater than the pace set last year and more than $3 million ahead of budget.

Sales tax collection makes up a greater total of the General Fund revenue, outpacing revenue from property taxes. This year is on pace to be the second largest collection in the city’s history (behind only FY 2023).  

The collection in August was 2.54% lower than August 2024 and marked the third-straight month the city reported a decrease year-over-year. City officials also reported that the August collection was 5.23% higher than the monthly budget.  

Sales tax revenue is generated by sales tax income from two months prior to collection; August’s collection is based on June sales. The City of Midland collects a full cent of the 8.25% of sales tax inside the City of Midland.
