WILDCATTER GROUNDBREAKING CELEBRATES MIDLAND'S FIRST TRAILHEAD

(Oct. 16, 2025)

MIDLAND, TEXAS -- Leaders from the City of Midland and around the community celebrated the groundbreaking of the Arlington/Deauville Trailhead – the beginning of exciting recreation options for Midland, specifically the Wildcatter Trail.

The Wildcatter Trail is multimodal trail system between Midland and Odessa. Phases 1 and 2 include:

  • pedestrian shade structures, bike and pedestrian trail and enhanced pedestrian crossing equipment from Champions Drive to the area around Tradewinds and Deauville (the project is expected to be let for construction in early 2026),
  • The continuation of the trail west to connect phase 1 to the University of Texas Permian Basin’s CEED building at the corner of State Highway 191 and Farm-to-Market Road 1788.

Those attending the groundbreaking included Businessman/developer Collin Sewell, cycling enthusiast and Midland FD firefighter Landy Atkins and members of Midland’s City Council, including Mayor Lori Blong, District 3 Councilman Jack Ladd and District 4 Councilwoman Amy Stretcher Burkes.

Comments included that the groundbreaking and ensuing construction represent not only growth and progress but also a shared commitment to connecting people, our community through accessible outdoor spaces and quality of life amenities.

The trailhead will serve as a welcoming gateway to the trail system — a place for runners, cyclists, families and nature lovers to gather, explore and experience the outdoors. Still, it is more than a trailhead — it’s a connection point between people and place, a space where future generations will come to enjoy the outdoors, stay active, and take pride in our shared community.
