CRASH REPORT SHOWS DROP IN FATALITIES; CRASHES NEAR LOWEST LEVELS SINCE 2022

(Feb. 20, 2026)

MIDLAND, TEXAS -- Fatal crashes and total fatalities dropped by more than one-third in 2025, according to the City of Midland’s 2025 Traffic Crash Report.

The 2025 crash summary shows fatalities, fatal crashes, injury crashes, and total crashes at their lowest levels since 2022 — even as citywide traffic volume increased by approximately 3%.

In 2025, the City reported:

  • Fatal crashes decreased from 18 in 2024 to 11 in 2025.
  • Total fatalities declined from 19 to 11.
  • Total crashes remained virtually unchanged, increasing by one to 2,745 in 2025.
  • Injury crashes rose slightly from 860 to 865.

Compared to 2023, 2025 recorded 283 fewer crashes, 10 fewer fatalities, eight fewer fatal crashes, and 98 fewer injury crashes.

The overall decline in fatalities and serious crashes reflects continued focus on targeted traffic enforcement and strategic police presence. Midland Police Department data shows intoxication-related collisions dropped 20% in 2025, while distracted driving collisions decreased 5% and cell phone-related collisions declined 23%.

MPD also conducted 21,360 traffic stops and issued 10,265 moving and parking citations in 2025.

In addition, MPD reported that Part 1 crimes — the most serious offense categories — declined in 2025 and are down 11.1% compared to 2021.

“The Engineering Department recognizes the Midland Police Department for increased traffic enforcement efforts throughout 2025,” the report states. “Enhanced enforcement, combined with strong support from the Midland City Council and City leadership, has strengthened compliance and reinforced the City’s data-driven safety initiatives.”

The Traffic Crash Report also found:

  • The Loop 250 at Andrews Highway interchange remains the highest crash location, with the top five crash sites occurring on Loop 250 or Interstate roadways.
  • October recorded the highest number of crashes (285), while June (188) and July (183) had the lowest. Fatal crashes were most frequent in November.

The 2025 Traffic Crash Report, released by the Traffic Operations Division, provides a comprehensive analysis of crash data and traffic trends within the city.

These trends align with the City’s Strategic Plan goal of ensuring a safe and secure community through data-driven enforcement and infrastructure coordination. The full 2025 Traffic Crash Report, along with reports dating back to 2010, is available on the City’s website under the Transportation page.

The City will continue monitoring high-collision intersections, coordinating with TxDOT and regional partners, and implementing engineering, enforcement, and operational improvements as funding allows.
