SALES TAX COLLECTION REMAINS AHEAD OF FORECAST

(Jan. 8, 2026)

MIDLAND, TEXAS -- The City of Midland remains ahead of last year’s record pace and ahead of this year's forecast when it comes to sales tax collected through the first four months of the fiscal year.

The Texas Comptroller’s Office reported that the City of Midland’s collection rose to $22,708,811, which is $1.815 million above budget through January and 2.54% ahead of the record pace set in fiscal year 2024-25.

Sales tax revenue is generated by sales tax income from two months prior to collection; January’s collection is based on November sales. The City of Midland collects a full cent of the 8.25% of sales tax inside the City of Midland.

Sales tax collection is important as it provides an economic metric in a community. The sales tax collection in Midland is also greater than the amount of property tax collected and helps with General Fund expenses (police, fire, parks, streets, etc).

The fiscal year begins in October.
