TAG PERMIAN BASIN MEMBERS INVESTIGATE CRIMINAL ACTIVITY AT ABANDONED APARTMENT COMPLEX
(Jan. 13, 2026)
MIDLAND, TEXAS -- During the months of December and January, members of the Midland TAG (Texas Anti-Gang Center) received multiple complaints regarding ongoing criminal activity at the abandoned Windgate Apartments, located at 2900 W. Illinois Ave.
Complaints included suspected narcotics activity, prostitution, storage of stolen property, and heavy foot traffic at all hours of the day and night. Nearby residents reported concerns for their safety due to the volume and nature of individuals entering and exiting the complex. Surveillance conducted by Midland Police Department detectives confirmed frequent foot traffic inside the closed and secured property, which had been repeatedly breached despite chained and locked gates, fencing, and posted no-trespassing signage.
On Jan. 7, 2026, members of the TAG Permian Basin conducted an enforcement operation at 2900 W. Illinois Ave. With the consent of the property’s Resident Agent, personnel from the Midland Police Department, Midland County Sheriff’s Office and the DEA entered the complex and contacted nine subjects who were unlawfully occupying various apartments within the property. All subjects were consolidated on the north side of the complex and identified.
While officers were contacting the subjects and conducting protective checks of additional apartments, drug paraphernalia and large quantities of property suspected to be stolen were observed in plain view. These findings were relayed to Narcotics and Property Crimes detectives staged on the north side of the complex. All individuals were confirmed to be trespassing and had no legal right to be on the property. With the consent of the Resident Agent, detectives conducted searches of eight apartments.
During the search of one apartment, detectives located approximately 16 grams of methamphetamine concealed inside a vacuum cleaner.
In another, detectives located a usable amount of marijuana on the bathroom counter and drug paraphernalia, specifically a methamphetamine pipe, under a pillow on the floor.
In two other apartments, detectives with the Midland Police Department Property Crimes Division located multiple items that had been previously reported stolen in Midland Police Department.
All nine subjects were issued criminal trespass warnings, advising them they were no longer permitted on the property and that any future presence would result in arrest for Criminal Trespass. Three were each found to have one confirmed outstanding warrant for Possession of a Controlled Substance and were placed under arrest. All three were transported to the Midland County Jail and booked accordingly.
One subject was confirmed to be a registered sex offender required to register annually for life. He was placed under arrest for Failure to Comply with Sex Offender Registration requirements.
All methamphetamine, marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and recovered stolen property were either seized and logged into evidence under this case number or returned to their rightful owners.
