Knox Box Program

The Midland Fire Department participates in a Knox Box program to help firefighters and first responders gain quick access to buildings during emergencies and reduce forced entry damage.

For Commercial Buildings

Buildings protected by a monitored fire alarm system or a fire sprinkler system are required to have a Knox Box installed. These can be purchased through the Knox Company at Knox Box.

• Sprinkler systems must be connected to a monitored fire alarm system.
• Post Indicating Values (PIVs) installed after January 1, 2020, are required to have electronic monitoring through the building's fire alarm system.
  • When the PIV is supervised by the alarm system, Knox padlocks are not required.
  • This change is being implemented to reduce the need for fire department staff to unlock the valve for maintenance.

For Residential Buildings 

In 2023, the Midland Fire Department expanded the program to include residential Knox Boxes.

Purpose:

Residential Knox Boxes give first responders secure access to your home during emergencies when you might be unable to open the door yourself.

• Fast access for firefighters and paramedics
• Reduce forced entries - minimizing the damage to your property
• Easy to re-secure your home after an emergency

How to Purchase:

• Residential Knox Box vaults are a one-time purchase with no monthly monitoring fees
• The Knox Box must be purchased directly from Knox; they are not sold at local retailers
• When ordering, remember to indicate that you are a resident of Midland.
