About Rescue Runners

Rescue Runners is a volunteer program aimed at recruiting individuals to walk or run with shelter dogs. Recognizing the stressful nature of the shelter environment, this program provides vital enrichment and aids in improving the dogs' social skills. These outings offer a glimpse into the dogs' personalities outside the kennel, which can significantly boost fostering and adoption efforts.

Date: 1st and 3rd Saturdays of each month.
Check-in: Check in anytime between 8:30 a.m - 9:00 a.m. (Event is held 8:30am to 10:00am)

  • Limited to 15 participants per event for safety & health of dogs.
  • Families, groups, and couples are welcome, but only one dog will be assigned per group.
  • Volunteers 15 years or younger must be accompanied by a guardian.

FAQs

Do I have to run?
While running isn't necessary, walking is a great option. However, please note that the dogs at the shelter might have limited leash training and spend much of their time in kennels, resulting in pent-up energy and potential pulling on the leash. Be prepared for this level of physical activity. If you're unsure, consider bringing a friend to "share a pup" during the walk.

Can underage volunteers participate?
Yes, volunteers aged 15 or older can walk a dog, provided a parent or guardian accompanies them. Children under 15 can also join the walk, but an adult must always hold the leash.

Are baby carriers or strollers allowed for volunteers bringing their infants or toddlers along?
Unfortunately, this event is not suitable for smaller children. The route, slightly over a mile long, includes sidewalks, dirt paths, and some rocky areas, which may not be ideal for strollers or for young children who might tire easily. Additionally, the dogs, weighing between 40-60lbs, tend to pull strongly on the leash due to their excitement from being out of the kennels. For the safety of all involved, volunteers must give their full attention to each dog they are walking or running with.

Can I bring my pet along with me to volunteer?
Unfortunately, we won't have the opportunity to properly introduce the dogs to ensure they get along with your pet on the walk, as they will be coming straight from their kennels. For everyone's safety, it's crucial for volunteers to give their full attention to each shelter pup they are walking or running with.
