Pet Ownership 101
Having a pet is a special experience. As pet owners, it's our job to look after our pets and make sure they have everything they need to be healthy and happy. This starts even before we bring them home.
New Pet Research & Preparation:
- Stay informed and compliant by keeping up to date with pet ordinances and regulations.
- Assist in managing animal overpopulation by regulating your pet(s)' reproduction via containment, or spaying/neutering.
Financial Consideration:
- Owning a pet(s) involves financial resources, including expenses for food, veterinary care, grooming, and other supplies.
Support & Education:
- Providing socialization and proper training for your pet(s) is essential to promote their well-being as well as fostering positive interactions with other animals and people.
- Providing preventive (e.g., vaccinations, parasite control) and therapeutic health care for the life of your pet(s) in consultation with, and as recommended by, your veterinarian.
- Ensure pets are properly identified with tags, microchips, or other identifying marks, and keep their registration information in associated databases up-to-date.
- Recognizing declines in your pet(s)' quality of life and making compassionate decisions, in consultation with your veterinarian, regarding appropriate end-of-life care options such as palliative care, hospice, or euthanasia.
Household Commitment:
- Choose a pet that fits well with your home and lifestyle, and refrain from making impulsive decisions.
- Commit to lifelong care for your pet, ensuring a lasting and loving relationship throughout their life.
- Involve your pets in your emergency or disaster planning by preparing an evacuation kit for them.
- Animals that spend extended periods outdoors need habitats that prioritize their health, safety, and overall well-being. Outdoor enclosures should be designed to minimize any distress or discomfort to the animal, ensuring access to suitable food, water, and shelter from extreme weather conditions.
Time & Availability:
- Ensuring your pet(s) get the right amount of exercise and mental stimulation suitable for their age, breed, and health.
Compatibility & Allergies:
- Maintaining only the type and number of pets that you can properly care for, providing them with a safe and suitable environment, including adequate food, water, shelter, health care, and companionship.
- Ensuring your pet(s) do not negatively impact others or the environment by practicing proper waste disposal, noise control, and preventing them from straying or becoming feral.
