The Midland City Council is set to consider cycling safety at its November 20 City Council Meeting.
The Council will consider an ordinance which would require drivers to provide three feet of clearance when passing a vulnerable road user such a bicyclist or runner. Commercial vehicles will be required to provide six feet of clearance.
“This ordinance is an important tool to protect vulnerable road users,” said City Councilwoman Sharla Hotchkiss. “As a City, it is time for us to take steps to prevent needless deaths on our roads,” she added.
The proposed ordinance carries a fine of up to $200 for violators.
