The City of Midland is approximately 60% complete with the instillation of new water meters. The new water meters are AMI (advanced metering infrastructure) smart meters that will help detect leaks faster for both the City and the customers.
The process of changing out the water meters with the new AMI smart meters can be found at https://www.midlandtexas.gov/977/Water-Meter-Replacement. City crews are currently working in Phase 1 and will continue the process through Phase 4. The crews are working to fill in all areas that do not currently have an AMI smart meter, which can be seen on the map located on the website.
The installation phase of the water meter project is estimated to be completed within 18 to 24 months from its start in fall 2019. The work to replace meters will be performed during normal working hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
The new meters will record consumption more accurately. In some cases, your bill may increase, but only if your current meter has been under-reporting usage.
