A Midland home received heavy damage after a heat lamp ignited a plastic dog house Thursday morning.
Midland Fire Department responded to reports of a fire at approximately 10:51 a.m. in the 5000 block of Blue Haven Drive, where they found an active fire in the rear of a residence. Flames extended up from an igloo style dog house placed against the exterior wall of the home toward the roof and into the attic space above the home's kitchen and living room. Flames and smoke caused heavy damage in the attic of the home, and water damage caused ceiling and attic insulation to fall into the interior living room and kitchen. No injuries were reported as a result of the fire.
The investigation into the fire revealed that the plastic dog house was ignited by a heat lamp located inside or near the dog house. MFD urges citizens to find other, safer avenues to keep their pets warm besides space heaters and heat lamps, which can be both a burn and fire hazard.
