Midland police have released the names of the Midland Police Department officer and his wife who both died in an apparent murder-suicide on Monday evening.
At approximately 5:40 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 15, Midland police officers responded to a silent 911 call originating from the address of 34-year-old Sgt. Chad Simpson, an employee of the MPD.
Upon arrival, first responders found Simpson deceased from a gunshot wound. His wife, 32-year-old Sandra Simpson, was transported to Midland Memorial Hospital with life-threatening injuries from a gunshot wound that was believed by officials to be fatal shortly after her arrival. Comments from the public led MPD to revisit whether Sandra Simpson was actually deceased on Tuesday, but authorities were not able to confirm whether the word of mouth was true.
The crime scene was handed over to the Odessa Police Department for processing, and the investigation into the incident is being conducted by the Texas Rangers. It is believed at this time that this incident was a murder-suicide.
Simpson most recently worked in MPD's traffic division and had been employed with the department for more than 9 years, also serving patrol and K-9 assignments throughout his career. The Simpsons leave behind two toddlers, who are currently in the custody of extended family.
"This is a very difficult time for the MPD family," said Police Chief Price Robinson. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and everyone involved."
The investigation is ongoing and next of kin has been notified.
Out of respect to the family and the ongoing Texas Ranger investigation, the Midland Police Department will not be making any further public statements.
MPD has received several questions regarding the Simpson children, and has been notified that the Midland Municipal Police Officers Association has set up account #10148733 with Community National Bank to benefit the toddlers.
Checks must be made out to MMPOA, and can include further description on the memo line. Donations can be dropped off at any Community National Bank branch or mailed to: MMPOA, P.O. Box 50111, Midland, Texas 79710.
